Wild basil essential oil is unique to our range of wild harvested and organically certified essential oils. The oil, which is part of the mint family, has a light to dark golden colour, depending on the season. The plants are harvested twice per year.
The oil has antimicrobial, antifungal, antioxidant, antiproliferative, insecticidal, and repellent properties. It could thus be used in a wash to calm skin irritations or clean small cuts and bruises. Studies have shown its effectiveness in treating ulcers and wounds. It also works well as a natural insect repellent, specifically against mosquitoes.
It has the most incredible smell, which captures the bushveld after the first summer rains perfectly. Safari guides working in protected areas in the northern parts of South Africa associate it with spring, when the elephants crush the new wild basil plants under their feet.
Wild basil essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves, stems, and dry flowers of Ocimum americanum. Harvesting starts after flowering and seeding to adhere to responsible wild harvesting practices. The plant is indigenous to South Africa.
