It is used to calm anxiety and lift the spirits - it can thus sooth or energize, depending on what would lead to greater balance. Rose geranium essential oil supports a healthy menstrual cycle, and can ease menstrual discomfort whilst reducing bloating. It is not recommended for use during pregnancy, but ideal for postpartum healing. Used in the correct concentrations on the skin, it can balance the skin's sebum and calm inflammation. Studies have also found it brings relief to those suffering from nerve-ending pains associated with shingles.
Rose geranium essential oil is steam distilled from the green leaves and stems of hybrid Pelargonium variety roseum. A naturally cross-bred high-yielding oil, known as Bourbon, originated from the island of Reunion, after Pelargonium graveolens, P. capitatum, and P. radens were taken there from South Africa, via Europe. Botanical experts, Demarne and Van der Walt, determined in 1989 that geranium Bourbon oil is produced from the leaves of a hybrid of P. capitatum and P. radens. This cultivar is usually identified as Pelargonium graveolens cv. roseum, but is also known as Pelargonium roseum asperum cv. bourbon.
